Administrative Detention: Arbitrary and Unjust under Israeli Occupation
The issue of administrative detainees in Palestine has become one of the most pressing matters raised by Israeli policies, where thousands of Palestinians live under the oppressive policy that grants the occupation authorities the power to arrest without specific charges or fair trial. Since October 7th, the number of administrative detainees has soared to unprecedented levels, reaching over 3,380 detainees, including children and women, whereas before October 7th, the number was approximately 1,320 detainees.
The policy of administrative detention allows Israeli authorities to renew detention orders indefinitely, making it an effective tool for suppressing and controlling Palestinians during periods of upheaval and uprisings. This policy targets all segments of Palestinian society, including students, journalists, activists, mothers, and former legislators, highlighting its use as a tool for intimidation and repression.
Throughout various historical periods, we have witnessed spikes in the numbers of administrative detainees during Palestinian uprisings, with their numbers sometimes reaching into the thousands. This repressive policy is used to detain Palestinians without a clear legal basis, reflecting continued injustice and oppression under the occupation policy.
The international community must decisively address these grave violations of human rights and demand an immediate halt to the policy of administrative detention, which constitutes a blatant violation of international humanitarian law.
